Bao Ma Zai was originally a small official title in the ancient government. Whenever the high-ranking official went on patrol or someone had admitted to senior officials, Bao Ma Zai would knock the gong in advance to promote it.
In Taiwan’s temple culture, “Bao Ma Zai” refers to the person that passes the message, walking at the forefront of the pilgrimage, whose task is to immediately report the traffic ahead, and knock the gong along the way to notify the followers that God or pilgrims are coming. Soon, believers are also reminded to set up incense tables to welcome God. Bao Ma Za will be wearing a black shirt, a bamboo hat, reading glasses, and a gong in his hands. Because of the abscesses on his feet, he had to roll up his trousers, one high and one low. The appearance of one foot wearing straw sandals and the other barefoot implies that life isn’t always perfect, but Bao Ma Zai remains faithful to his duty.
